The Morning Bookend

Step 1: The Negativity Neutralizer

As you wake up, try to neutralize negative thoughts as they appear. These are those “morning dread” types of thoughts that sometimes flood our minds, like, “I’ll never get it all done!” or “I hate all the things I have to do!” As you think these types of thoughts, catch the thoughts and stop them, with a large mental net called The Negativity Neutralizer.

After you hear yourself think these negative morning thoughts, catch them in The Negativity Neutralizer net, and add the thought: “That’s a really harsh thought I’m thinking.” Labeling the thoughts as “harsh” will pull you out of the thought, and it will allow you to see the thoughts as an observer. Separating your thoughts away from yourself and looking at them from a distance can help you start to feel empowered to change them. This is called developing a mindful awareness of your thought patterns.
